Why renting a car in Japan is a different level experience

Driving in Japan is not just about getting from A to B. It is about feeling the precision of the roads, the respect in the traffic, and the connection with the car.

If you are into JDM culture, this becomes something else entirely.

You are not just renting a car. You are stepping into a piece of history.

From mountain roads to perfectly smooth highways, everything feels designed for drivers.

And yes, the freedom you feel here is real.

How rental cars work in Japan (and what you must know)

The process itself is quite straightforward, but there are a few critical details that can make or break your experience.

First, you will need:

  • A valid driving license

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) if your country requires it

Most rental companies are extremely professional and efficient. Cars are usually in perfect condition, clean, and well maintained.

Location matters more than you think

Choose your rental location wisely.

Some of the best rental spots are:

  • Near major airports like Narita International Airport or Haneda Airport

  • Close to car culture hotspots like Daikoku Parking Area

Picking the right location saves you time, stress, and sometimes even money.

The ETC card: small detail, massive difference

This is something many people overlook.

The ETC card is used to pay highway tolls automatically. Without it, you will need to stop manually at toll booths, which breaks the flow of the drive and can become stressful.

With an ETC card:

  • You pass through tolls smoothly

  • You often get discounted rates

  • Your driving experience stays fluid and enjoyable

Always ask your rental company if they provide one. It is absolutely worth it.

Be careful: Japan roads can surprise you

Japan is clean, organised and efficient, but also… tight.

Very tight.

Things to watch out for:

  • Narrow streets, especially in cities and rural villages

  • Tight parking spaces

  • Curbs that can easily damage tyres or wheels

Even experienced drivers can get caught off guard here.

Take your time. Drive smoothly. Respect the space.

Hidden costs: mileage and extra fees

Not all rental deals are equal.

Some companies charge:

  • Extra fees for additional mileage

  • Premiums for sports cars or special models

  • Insurance upgrades

Always read the conditions carefully before booking.

That “cheap” deal can quickly become expensive if you do not pay attention.

My personal experience: GR86, 3 days, pure freedom

The other day we rented a Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary for 3 days.

And honestly… it reminded me why I love this country so much.

We drove to:

  • Daikoku Parking Area

  • Fuji Speedway

Everything just clicked.

The car, the roads, the atmosphere.

Late night at Daikoku surrounded by incredible builds. Then early morning drives with Mount Fuji in the background.

It is not just a trip. It is a memory you carry forever.

Why you should do this at least once in your life

Driving in Japan allows you to:

  • Explore places that trains simply cannot reach

  • Connect deeply with car culture

  • Experience iconic roads and locations at your own pace

And most importantly…

It makes you feel free.

Final advice from someone living it

If you are coming to Japan and you love cars, do not hesitate.

Plan it properly.

Choose the right car. Understand the rules.

And then just enjoy it.

Because once you experience Japan behind the wheel of a proper JDM car…

There is no going back.

You will understand why this place is special.

And you will feel lucky you did it right.
